Congratulations to the RTAM Sponsors in the Student Awards Program

CONGRATULATIONS RTAM SPONSORS IN THE STUDENT AWARD PROGRAM

By Peggy Prendergast

Student Award winners come from all parts of the province with different goals and dreams for their Post Graduate Education. Many benefits await them from the “legacy of learning” that RTAM is offering, but the benefit for you, the older RTAM adult, is the relationship that evolves as you inspire, and engage with, this cherished relative. I believe all of us as retired teachers know that: “the more you learn, the more you earn,” but the relationships built with our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and now great grandchildren for me, are indeed priceless.

Over 400 RTAM members have encouraged relatives to apply for a Student Award and over 40 of those young relatives have received awards. In the first year of the Student Awards Program, four students received $500 from the fund. With compound interest and the investing expertise of the Winnipeg Foundation the fund grew each year, and with further generosity from RTAM members the fund has provided over 40 awards. Students for the past four years are now receiving $1000 awards. As RTAM moves forward, RTAM members can expect the awards to increase in amount and number.

In support of your efforts as an RTAM member to assist your young relatives, RTAM’s Student Success Portfolio Program is providing a way for the student to keep a record of all the extra support provided by that student in their school as well as the support they provide with volunteer work in the community during their time in high school. This portfolio may encourage the student to apply for many other awards, bursaries, and scholarships that may be available. This program was established with the help of a New Horizons Grant of $5000 from the Federal Government. A description of the program (The Student Success Portfolio Program) and an application form is available on the RTAM website: Student Success Portfolios (rtam.mb.ca).

Consider sponsoring a relative: child, grandchild, great grandchild, niece or nephew, that is graduating from Grade 12 and intends to apply for post graduate education for the coming year. An application form is on the RTAM website: Student Awards (rtam.mb.ca) and in KIT (KIT Magazine (rtam.mb.ca)). By checking the RTAM website you can find ways to donate dollars to keep the endowment fund growing faster so help is available to more or our young student relatives who are going to be the leaders in world to come, as well as the opportunity for you, the older adult sponsor, to develop a stronger lifelong relationship with this young person, a priceless benefit for the rest of your lives. RTAM is LEAVING A LEGACY OF LIFELONG LEARNING.
