The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program helps address feelings of loneliness and isolation that so many have experienced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program matches people over the age of 18 with trained Red Cross volunteers who connect with them regularly to check-in, provide emotional support, encourage healthy coping strategies, and suggest well-being resources and community connections to other existing services. Volunteers provide wellness checks and weekly phone calls, and can help provide connections to community resources and other referral services. Scheduled phone calls are tailored to meet each person’s needs. Calls can range from a two-minute check-in to a longer, more social chat.

RTAM partners with UNESCO Canadian Commission

The Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba (RTAM) is proud to announce a new partnership with UNESCO Canadian Commission and their school based programs here in Manitoba. Our goal in the partnership is to grow awareness about UNESCO schools and programs, promote their need for volunteers to work with students here in province, and how RTAM will promote those opportunities to our members for the next two years through our various media platforms and channels. Come back often for updates on programs and volunteer opportunities.

A message from UNESCO Canada (Manitoba) and Linda Connor (Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning)

Greetings from the UNESCO Schools Network!

Locally, nationally, and internationally, UNESCO Schools network together to "create a culture of peace" in school communities. Established by the United Nations in 1953, the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) Schools Network was created. Manitoba was the first province in Canada to initiate the UNESCO Schools Network in 2002 with 5 schools; there are currently 29 in Manitoba from the English, French and French immersion programs, and, nationally, the network has grown to 130 schools in 9 provinces and 1 territory. UNESCO schools are part of an international network of 12, 500 schools in 182 countries.

Each year, our Manitoba UNESCO Schools network with administrators, educators and students as "laboratory of ideas" for themes connected to curriculum, such as Human Rights, Reconciliation, and Sustainability. One exemplary network initiative was the book, Answering the Calls: A Child's View of the 94 Calls to Action. This year, we are working to create Stories of Place, and the Place of Stories/Histoire de lieux, lieux d’histoire. This initiative will have schools connect to the significance of the land on which their school is located - past, present and future- and create story maps which will be featured on the ESRI ArcGIS Education site. Schools will also be sending representatives to a National UNESCO Schools Conference at York University in Toronto in April where they will have the opportunity to be part of Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) workshops.

Being part of the UNESCO Schools Network builds upon a whole-school approach to enrich the knowledge and understanding of our world, locally, nationally, and internationally.

1780 Wellington, Visitors Policy

The RTAM offices are located at 1780 Wellington Avenue, in a multi-use office space. Located near the Winnipeg International Airport, the Hilton Hotel on property attracts many tourists and visitors and can also be used as overflow housing when natural disasters like forest fires or flooding take place around Manitoba. We also have Canada Post, Express Scripts and several other businesses in the office hallways, lobby and towers on site.

Due to an increase in traffic and safety concerns from 2023, the RTAM office is starting a new policy effective immediately (January 2nd, 2024). Only those who schedule or book appointments in advance of coming to visit in person will be admitted to our office. Anyone who does not book an appointment before coming down will unfortunately be turned away so we can maintain safety protocols moving forward. If a member books an appointment and arrives with a guest who was not mentioned in the appointment request, then only that initial member will be admitted to the office, other guests will be asked to wait outside.

For anyone dropping off paperwork or forms, you may book an appointment in advance of coming to the RTAM office, or you may feel welcome to slide your documents under the door at any time and without an appointment. Our cleaning staff have been instructed to leave anything they find on the floor for our office team and not to throw paper out or in the garbage/recycling. Anyone making payments should never leave money or cheques un-attended. We ask anyone making a payment to schedule an appointment with us before coming to the RTAM office.

We thank everyone as we work to make our office a safe place for all volunteers, guests and employees.
