Empowering Your Tomorrow - presented by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education (CFEE)
Wednesday, November 12, 2025 | Virtual | 10:00-11:30 am
Cost: Members - Free; Guests $10.00

Retirement planning isn’t just about hitting a magic number—it’s about picturing the life you want and ensuring your savings can support it. We help participants think about their goals for the next 1, 3, and 5 years, and then start to build a plan to reach them. The workshop will also highlight Canada’s main sources of retirement income: public pensions (CPP/QPP and OAS), employer pensions, RRSPs, TFSAs and other savings . We’ll show participants how to use the government’s Retirement Income Calculator and other tools to estimate their future income and test different retirement ages. We’ll end by encouraging attendees to set clear goals, revisit their plan annually, and consider factors such as health care costs, taxes and evolving family responsibilities. Participants will leave with a solid framework for creating a personalized, flexible retirement plan instead of relying on generic "rules of thumb."

Legacy Planning - presented by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education (CFEE)
Wednesday, December 3, 2025 | Virtual | 10:00-11:30 am
Cost: Members - Free; Guests $10.00

Legacy planning goes beyond drafting a will; it’s about ensuring your assets are handled according to your wishes and reducing stress for loved ones. The workshop will demystify powers of attorney—legal documents that let someone you trust manage your finances if you become unable to. We’ll explain the differences between your POA for health and wealth, and your executor, and where the powers of each begin and end. Participants will learn why choosing a trustworthy attorney and understanding provincial rules is crucial to protecting their interests. We’ll then cover wills, trusts, and philanthropy. Without a valid will, provincial law—not you—decides who receives your estate. We’ll discuss who can make a will, options for drafting one (DIY kits vs. hiring a lawyer) and the importance of naming an executor who understands your wishes. Finally, we’ll stress the importance of reviewing documents regularly, discussing your plans with your family and advisors, and keeping paperwork accessible so your legacy unfolds smoothly rather than chaotically.

Maximizing Your Pension and Benefits - presented by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education (CFEE)
Wednesday, December 17, 2025 | Virtual | 10:00-11:30 am
Cost: Members - Free; Guests $10.00

Many retirees unknowingly leave money on the table because they don’t understand how pensions and tax credits interact. This workshop demystifies Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS) and other government benefits. We’ll explain how CPP contributions continue if you work between 60 and 65. We’ll discuss OAS payment amounts and the Guaranteed Income Supplement for low-income seniors. Attendees will learn about the OAS recovery tax ("clawback") and how deferring OAS can increase future payments. The second half of the session focuses on often missed tax incentives. We’ll review the Age Amount credit and the Pension Income Amount. Participants will see how pension income splitting with a spouse can reduce taxes but may partially reduce the Age Amount credit. We’ll also cover provincial credits for home renovations and accessibility adaptations and strategies like RRSP/RRIF withdrawal timing. The goal is to empower seniors to legally minimize taxes, maximize benefits and avoid surprises that could erode their retirement income.

Staying Engaged in Retirement (Work vs. Volunteering) - presented by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education (CFEE)
Wednesday, January 7, 2026 | Virtual | 10:00-11:30 am
Cost: Members - Free; Guests $10.00

Retirement doesn’t mean disengaging from the workforce or your community; in fact, staying active can improve mental and physical wellbeing. We’ll examine the pros and cons of working in retirement—whether parttime, contract or self-employed. The session will outline how CPP contributions are mandatory if you work and collect CPP between 60 and 65 and optional after 65. We’ll also explain how higher employment income could trigger OAS clawbacks. Participants will learn how to balance extra income with potential tax implications and how employment affects other benefits. Volunteering offers another way to stay engaged without complicating benefits. We’ll discuss how volunteer roles can provide purpose, social connection and skill development—advantages that may reduce health care costs and improve life satisfaction. Attendees will get tips on choosing volunteer opportunities aligned with their passions, whether mentoring youth, sharing professional skills with non profits or contributing to community boards. The workshop will emphasize that both paid and unpaid activities can keep retirees mentally sharp and socially connected, and participants should evaluate financial and lifestyle goals to decide which path (or combination) suits them best.

Accommodations and Lifestyle Changes - presented by the Canadian Foundation of Economic Education (CFEE)
Wednesday, March 11, 2026 | Virtual | 10:00-11:30 am
Cost: Members - Free; Guests $10.00

Housing and lifestyle decisions are a major part of retirement planning. We’ll start by outlining the spectrum of senior housing options—from staying in your own home with in-home assistance to living with family, joining a retirement community or moving into a care home. Participants will learn that the cost of housing generally increases with the level of service. We’ll discuss the financial and emotional considerations of each option and highlight programs and subsidies available to low-income seniors. We’ll also dive into "aging in place." The session will cover how to adapt your home for safety—adding grab bars, improving lighting, or modifying entryways—and note that some provinces offer tax credits or grants for these renovations. We’ll reference guidance that urges seniors to review their current home and community to decide whether modifications or a future move will best meet their needs. Participants will get tips on comparing assisted living contracts (what services are included, transportation, complaint handling) and how to plan for the possibility of needing long-term care. The aim is to equip seniors with information to make housing and lifestyle choices that support independence, safety, and financial sustainability.
