RTAM members and invited guests experienced a pleasant social evening at the Manitoba Legislature as they met with The Honourable Ed Schreyer and many of his colleagues to pay tribute to his government's recognition of the need for a Cost of Living Index for teacher's pensions. Mr. Schreyer was very appreciative of having many of his colleages invited to the event as well. He mentioned the importance that their government placed upon the indexing of teacher pensions and that it wasn't just a bill thrown in amongst 70 other bills of the time. His government considered it with great gravity and much thought. In reference to government actions, he said, "Whatever you do, you must bring about more equality of the human condition." He continued to discuss the processes of "funded" and "unfunded" liabilities and how the government should be expected to make good on its initial solemn obligations. He was pleased to note that after 30 to 40 years there are people saying about his government, "You did the right thing." Mr. Schreyer concluded his speech with a quote from Robert Browning, "We try to do the right thing, for a man's reach should exceed his grasp, lest what is heaven for?"
